And why was it that certain sounds, frequencies, and repetitious rhythmic patterns suggested stars, floating galaxies, and even the colorful opaque planets orbiting in subdued ellipses?  Why were certain pieces of music harmonically and rhythmically linked to the stars and suggestive of the parallel light that rained upon the earth in illusory radiants bursting apart?

        The main character of my second novel, ‘THE MERMAID SKELETONS,’ is a neuroscientist who does non-invasive research with free-ranging Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), studying their social and communicative behaviors in the wild.
       Dolphins coevolved with humans to have the highest EQ’s compared to all other species on the planet.  EQ compares the body to brain ration.  Dolphins and humans have big brains compared to their body size.  Dolphins are smarter than the great apes that we are more closely related to.
Our last common ancestor with dolphins was 100 million years ago.  We evolved with dolphins to have bigger brains compared to body size separately in different environments.  Dolphins evolved bigger brains in the ocean and humans on land.  Dolphins evolved their more complex bigger brains 15 million years before humans.
       If aliens arrived on our planet millions of years ago and were looking for an intelligent species to communicate with, they would have chosen dolphins and not humans. 
The visual cortex in humans is in the back of the brain and the auditory cortex is on the sides of the head.  In dolphins, both the visual and auditory cortex are located on the top of the brain.  They use this portion of the brain together and evolved a skill their entire skull adapted around, which is echolocation.  Dolphins can see what they hear.
     Dolphin brains are also more complex than humans in emotional and social areas.  They are self-aware and can recognize themselves in mirrors, understand their own thoughts, knowledge, and memories. 
     Information for this project came from The Wild Dolphin Project in Florida, which studies the natural history, behaviors, social structures, communication, and habitat of spotted and bottlenose dolphins.  And from Lori Marino who is the founder and executive director of The Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy and also serves on the advisory council of METI (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence).
